I bought these because I enjoy throwing $20 bills at a novelty. And at that price (cost of a 3 pack on Amazon) a novelty is what these are. Reading the label, the primary ingredient in these chips is cornmeal. If you’re looking for healthy, at 16g of carbs per serving, you’re just as well with an ordinary potato chip. And if you really buy into the sustainability lecture on the back of the bag, potato chips got ya there too.

Opening up the bag you’ll notice a distinct odor. If you’ve ever owned a pet lizard, you’ll recognize it…

This recipe has been a family favorite for years. A combination of citrus sweet and savory make for a delicious twist to the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. It also produces a similarly sweet and tangy gravy.

This recipe requires a little advance preparation, but is well worth it. The cooking needs very little maintenance, giving you some extra time in preparing dinner. The brine prevents it from drying out so there’s no basting. Just put it in the oven and flip it halfway through. The tea ensures a beautiful golden brown color every time.

Beginning October of this year, Google will shut down its Play Music service. This isn’t the first time Google has shut down a service that I frequent. Back in 2013 I started up my own Tiny Tiny RSS server after Google Reader was shut down. Google offers YouTube Music as an alternative. It may be good for some, but it’s missing many features I need: No caching for offline playback and interstitial advertising are my primary points of contention. I can pay $10 a month to alleviate those shortcomings. But that’s a lot of money to access a music collection…

Adapted from the presentation “HTML5 Game Development With Phaser”, delivered to the Fredericksburg Developer group on September 10, 2019

Game development for the web can be challenging. The Phaser framework offers a complete API for developing <canvas> games in a straightforward and well organized environment. In this article we’ll look at the core features of phaser and use them to create a clone of the classic nintendo arcade game “Mario Bros.”

Adapted from the presentation “The Progressive Web App Philosophy”, delivered to the Fredericksburg Developer group on February 12, 2019

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a normal website that mimics the responsiveness and functionality that you expect from an installed app. It can work offline, has access to your camera, GPS and other hardware, accepts push notifications when it’s off, and can even be “installed” with its own icon and window. So naturally, PWAs are often thought of as a replacement for a native app. But PWAs are much more than that.

Behind every Progressive Web App is a philosophy…

Progressive Web Apps, or, PWAs, are a new paradigm in web development that strive to bring a native app experience to a website. Modern browsers give us access to device hardware such as the camera, accelerometers, and GPS. The latest versions give us access to the network interface and cache, providing a seamless offline experience. Top that off with the ability to install to the home screen and you have a website that is indistinguishable from a native app.

I was looking for a project to best show off a PWA and serve as an example in my portfolio. I…

Don’t compare it to Chromecast

I set out to compare the Fire TV Stick with Chromecast and soon realized that was a mistake.Chromecast has only one function, play whatever video your phone/tablet/computer tells it to. Chromecast turns your television into a big-screen peripheral for your device. That works for a wide range of situations but sometimes you need additional functionality, especially when a phone/tablet/computer isn’t available. This is where set-top boxes like Roku, AppleTV and the original Fire TV become useful. Fire TV Stick doesn’t compete with Chromecast, it competes with those set-top boxes; and that’s a good thing. There’s room for Fire TV Stick…

With the Chromecast dev kit well out of beta, app development for the platform is exploding. Early on we saw lots of support for video streaming services. Plex, YouTube and Netflix (in that order) are still my most often used Chromecast apps. I use them daily. But what I find interesting are the apps that take Chromecast beyond movies. Back in December I wrote about Google’s use of Chromecast as a peripheral, with their Santa Tracker app. Many developers are following suit and using Chromecast for a wide range of applications. …

Relive the night of October 30, 1938

On the night of October 30th, 1938, Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater on the Air presented a dramatization of the HG Wells Classic “The War of the Worlds”. Their play took the form of a series of news bulletins portraying a realistic-sounding fictional Martian invasion. Those who tuned in late missed the introduction of the play, taking them out of their fictitious context. Many mistook its realistic presentation for actual reports of an imminent invasion. Whether is was thought to be Martians, or humans disguised as Martians, people believed their homes were under attack by a foreign enemy. …
